Smart-Electron Women in Science

SMART-electron aims at developing an innovative technological platform for designing, realizing and operating all-optical rapidly-programmable phase masks for electrons.

SMART-electron will introduce a new paradigm where properly synthesized ultrafast electromagnetic fields will be used for engineering the phase space of a free-electron wave function.

This will allow us to achieve unprecedented space/time/energy/momentum shaping of electron matter waves, thus surpassing conventional passive monolithic schemes and revolutionizing the way materials are investigated in electron microscopy.

The SMART-electron Consortium comprises some of the top players in the world of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and nano-photonics:

University of Milano-Bicocca / UNIMIB

École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne / EPFL

The Institute of Photonic Science / ICFO

Israel Institute of Technology / TECHNION

Italian National Research Council – CNR

HOLOEYE Photonics AG – HOLOEYE

QED Film & Stage Productions Ltd. – QED

The Consortium has been tailor-made in order to reach project goals as quickly and effectively as possible, but also to attain maximum impact in the scientific world and in society at large. The wide cross-section of skills and geographical spread in the Consortium ensure that all requirements of responsiveness and adaptive change, diversity and inclusion, openness and transparency, anticipation and reflection are satisfied.
